Some of my fondest memories growing up was my dad spinning some Chuck Berry in the living room and singing along. No other artist would inspire us to do funny dances and play air guitar like Chuck’s tunes did.
It’s in my humble opinion that Chuck Berry is the ultimate King of Rock n Roll. I have a ton of respect for Elvis for his major contributions in music, motion pictures, influencing and inspiring a lot great artists to sell their souls to rock n roll.
Let’s be honest if Chuck Berry’s skin color wasn’t a factor he would’ve had more universal recognition and it would’ve been hard to take that crown off of him. Chuck Berry had his own unique guitar sound, wrote his own music and delivered it like no other with his signature moves on stage. Unfortunately in his era it wasn’t safe to cross certain state lines if you were the wrong color and you could forget about having massive exposure on a screen.
I will even go as far as saying that there would be no Beatles or Rolling Stones had it not been for the groundwork Chuck created. Hell even “The Killer” Jerry Lee Lewis acknowledged Chuck as the undisputed king and he was a force of nature that came up at the same era.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I have mine. I’m truly saddened by his passing and that I never saw him perform. I do however celebrate the fact that he lived to be 90 years old and rocked all the way to his deathbed.
Thanks Chuck for creating music that was built to last through the ages and gets my daughter to spontaneously break into a dance!
